RFCC Spring 2019 Scheduled & Volunteer Recruitment Push

MRC_exercise

Greetings! We here at the River Forest Citizen Corps hope that everyone had a wonderful winter and holiday season. With spring upon us, we’re getting ready for another year of community engagement and support.

Last year, the RFCC took part in over a dozen community events and exercises. Our hard work and expertise ensured the safety of hundreds of community members and saved our collective governments thousands of taxpayer dollars. We also provided first aid services to dozens of people and helped dispose of nearly 30 pounds of expired prescriptions drugs. It was a great year!

Looking forward to this season, the RFCC is already scheduled to support six community events, with a few more in the works. Volunteers are needed for all of them! Unfortunately, a few key members have left the area over the past year, so we’ll be counting on everyone still with us to carry us through the 2019 season. We’re also planning a recruitment push this spring, so if you know of anyone who is looking for ways to contribute toward their community, please tell them to visit www.rfcitizencorps.org for more information or reach out to us at rfcitizencorps@gmail.com.

Please see our list of scheduled events below and let us know which ones you’d like to volunteer for. Thank you for everything!

ORIGINAL POST: We’re currently looking for volunteers to help out with two events scheduled for later this month: the Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride and the Forest Park Firefighter 5k. If you’re available to help, please email us or sign up here & here. Details are as follows:

Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride: June 21, from 9:00am until about 10:30 @ multiple locations in River Forest & Forest Park. We’ll be providing traffic management at multiple locations along the route. And since there are more intersections that volunteers, we’ll need to be able to provide our own transportation so we can easily move to multiple posts along the route.

Forest Park Fire Fighter 5k: June 23 from about 2:30pm to 5:00 @ Concordia Cemetery. The Forest Park Fire Department has requested a few individuals to staff the first aid tent for the race. I’m hoping for at least two people to assist here, with at least one medically trained (though two would be ideal). The FPFD provided all of the required gear, including tent, chairs and first aid gear, though we’ll probably bring some of our own medical gear as well.

Memorial Day Parade Volunteer Plan

web1_memorial-day-parade

Here are details for Citizen Corps volunteers that will be participating in this year’s River Forest Memorial Day Parade.

  • 7:30am: We’ll be meeting at the RFCC trailer at around 7:30am Memorial Day to unload all needed gear and set up the first aid tent. Everyone doesn’t need to be here at that time, but any extra hands that can make it would help out tremendously.
  • 8:00: The police briefing will be held at 8:00am at Village Hall. They’ll be handing out assignments for the day and any other relevant operational or safety information.
  • 8:30: It’s advised that you the police briefing, but in the off chance that you aren’t able to attend, please arrive at the RFCC trailer between 8:30 & 8:45. There, I’ll be able to give you your post and any other relevant information.
  • 9:00: At around 9am, we’ll all be expected to be at our posts and ready to close down assigned intersections.
  • 9:30: Parade steps off. The parade is expected to last about an hour or so, after which they’ll say a few words at Keystone Park. People will linger around the area for a bit more after that.
  • 11:30/12:00: The plan is to begin closing up shop and stowing away all gear by around 11:30 or 12:00pm. Then we’ll all be free to enjoy the rest of our holiday!

So that’s the plan, but be advised that some scheduling may change as the event progresses.

We’re still soliciting volunteers, so if you’re able to donate a few hours to your community Memorial Day morning, please don’t hesitate to reach out to rfcitizencorps@gmail.com to let us know.

Thank you! And we hope everyone has a fun and safe holiday weekend!

Let me know if you have any questions.

River Forest Memorial Day Parade: Volunteers Needed!

The Citizen Corps is currently preparing to support River Forest’s annual Memorial Day Parade scheduled for May 28th. Once again, we’ll be serving the thousands of participants & attendees by operating the first aid tent at Keystone Park and assisting with traffic management. Please let us know if you’re interested in volunteering!

More information about the event can be found here.

POD Exercise Recap

Thank you to everyone from River Forest, Forest Park and Elmwood Park that helped to make our Point of Dispensing (POD) exercise at Concordia University a success. Firefighters, Police Officers, volunteers, Cook County officials and university staff all trained together to review all aspects of POD process, including its establishment, operations and security needs.

And a special thanks to Lieutenant Steve Weiler of Forest Park PD for organizing and leading the event!

POD Exercise, May 9 2018 at Concordia University

Just a quick reminder that we’ll be taking part in the Tripcom MRC’s Point of Dispensing (POD) equipment exercise scheduled for 9:30 am on Wednesday, May 9 2018 at Concordia University’s gymnasium. The event will not be a full scale exercise, but rather is intended to focus on the set-up and take-down of all equipment needed for the POD. It will also give members a chance to walk through the POD process from start to finish. At this point, it’s still not clear how long the full evolution of the exercise will take, but my estimate is it will last for just a few hours.

We’re still recruiting for this exercise! So if you’re available to help out, even for just a portion of the event, please come out and give us a hand. Thank you!
